Design
Purpose: Two types of agricultural economic surveys were carried out by Statistics New Zealand. First, the Economic Survey of Horticulture and second, the Economic Survey of Cropping, Mixed and Other Livestock Farms.

Economic Survey of Horticulture: The statistical population from which the survey was selected was all farms in the previous year's Agricultural Production Survey and classified by the New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (NZSIC) to horticulture farms.

These are NZSIC 1115, horticulture i.e. vegetable including tomatoes, tobacco hop, flowers, mushroom growing, and plant nurseries. NZSIC 1117 fruit growing including grapes. If a business both grows grapes and produces wine, the business is assigned to the predominant activity, i.e. the one which produces the most income.

Economic Survey of Cropping, Mixed and Other Livestock Farms: - The statistical population from which the survey was selected is all farms in the previous year's Agricultural Production Survey and classified by the New Zealand Industrial Classification (NZSIC) to Cropping, Mixed and Other Livestock Farms.

There are NZSIC 1114 Mixed Livestock, Horse farming and breeding (but excluding horse racing training and ownership which are in NZSIC 94305), Deer, Goats, Small Animals, Pigs and Poultry Farming, NZSIC 1116 Cropping, Cropping in conjunction with other types of farming and Other Farming not elsewhere classified.

General Information ..Population covered

The farm is assigned to a classification, based on a calculation done at the conclusion of each Agriculture Production Survey. An estimated Value of Agricultural Output (EVAO) is calculated using the production data supplied by respondents. In essence a farm is assigned to a farm type when the majority of it's income is derived from that activity.

Significant Farms

Farms are in addition classified as "significant" or "non-significant". The non-significant farms collectively produce less than 5 percent of the value of the statistical population's production, and are excluded from this survey.

Source of Sample

The sample population was selected from the Business Directory of Statistics New Zealand, which is intended to cover all significant businesses in the country.

The sample is selected at the accounting unit level, and stratified by NZSIC classification, and EVAO.

Statistical Unit Information is released at farm type classification level.

Selection Unit

Collection Unit Questionnaires are sent to farming activity units (that are within the population scope), with information asked about Income, Expenditure and Stock Changes for the designated unit's accounting period.

Output Variables

Output variables are pieces of individual information that can be extracted from the survey/output data. Often output variables can be cross tabulated with other output variables, for example sales by industry classification. The list below contains all current and past output variables which have been released for this survey/output.

Guide to Interpreting Data

Summary of Changes to Survey/Output ..Since 1981 Statistics New Zealand has conducted income and expenditure surveys for a range of farm types not surveyed by either the Dairy Board or the New Zealand Meat and Wool Boards' Economic Service. However, before 1991 the Statistics New Zealand surveys tended to cover a different selection of farm types each year. Therefore it has not been possible to bring together the results of these economic surveys and those prepared by the producer boards to present a complete income and expenditure picture for farming.

It is only since 1990 that Statistics New Zealand has conducted an economic survey for the same farm types on an annual basis. This has therefore limited the scope for time series analysis for farm types except for those conducted by the producer boards. Since 1991, economic surveys of cropping, mixed and other livestock farming and horticulture have been collected every year.

For horticultural farms, economic surveys have been conducted annually since 1990. However, some caution is required in comparing the annual results, due to some differences in the horticulture activities surveyed in each year. For example, in 1990 grape and vegetable growers and nurseries were excluded.

The Agriculture Economic Surveys were last conducted for the June 1995 year.

Usage and Limitations of the Data ..Data is released at a national level, with some regional data for certain farmtypes also available.

Related Data Sources ..Agricultural economic surveys conducted by other organisations include:

New Zealand Meat and Wool Boards' Economic Service - Economic survey of Sheep and Beef Farms;

New Zealand Dairy Board (Livestock Improvement Corporation Ltd) - Economic Survey of Factory Supply Dairy Farms, for owner operators and 50/50 sharemilkers.

It is considered likely that there is some overlap and omissions in the coverage between the economic surveys conducted by Statistics New Zealand and the Producer Boards due to differences in defining farm types. For example, some farms classified to mixed livestock in the Statistics New Zealand survey could also satisfy the Economic Service's selection criteria for a sheep and beef farm.

Sampling Errors ..The sample is selected at the accounting unit level, and stratified by NZSIC classification, and EVAO.

The results are derived from a statistically representative sample selected by Poisson sampling in each stratum. The sample was designed to give estimates of total income and total expenditure at the 95 percent confidence level within a sampling error of..
5% for horticulture
7% for kiwifruit
5% for Mixed Livestock
5% for Cropping and Other Livestock

The achieved sampling errors, were ...
5% for horticulture
6% for kiwifruit
5% for Mixed Livestock
5% for Cropping and Other Livestock

Non-sampling errors
