Output Variables
Output variables are pieces of individual information that can be extracted from the survey/output data. Often output variables can be cross tabulated with other output variables, for example sales by industry classification. The list below contains all current and past output variables which have been released for this survey/output.
| Variable Name | Description |
 | |
| Millions | Cigarettes |
| Tonnes | Tobacco |

Guide to Interpreting Data
Summary of Changes to Survey/Output ..The monthly cigarettes and tobacco survey began in January 1973. Data was collected on an annual basis, between 1957 and 1972, for the year ended 31 December. The two output variables have not changed at all over this time. Changes in the methods of collecting excise duty, in September 1986 and since March 1990, have caused fluctuations in the data. Indexation increases on excise rates have occurred on a half yearly basis. Indexation increases occur annually, on the 1st of December, from December 1995.
As of the 1st September 2010, these series have been discontinued under our responsibility to ensure confidentiality of published statistical information.
Usage and Limitations of the Data ..One of the limitations of the series is that it is quite variable. This is due to the fact that excise on cigarettes and tobacco is indexed to the rate of inflation (1st of December each year) and therefore there tends to be a bigger volume of cigarettes and tobacco passed through Custom's before the excise increases.
