Definition
Island meshblocks are meshblocks containing offshore islands that are not linked to a mainland meshblock.

Previously, in order for an island to be given its own meshblock, or a group of islands to be meshblocked together, the following criteria had to be complied with:
* The island/s must be named, and/or
* The island/s must be populated.

Although there are still some islands that have not been separated from oceanic areas, the majority of islands, or groups of islands, have now been meshblocked regardless of whether they are named or populated in an effort to separate land from water.
