Definition
In a randomised design, the selected sample is what we are interested in getting an estimate from. If there is non-response (which there generally is) then 2 problems arise 1. any difference between respondents and non-respondents can lead to
bias
.
2. the sample size is smaller and thus the
sampling error
is greater.
Example
If we select a sample of 50 people and only 40 people respond, the
achieved sample
consists of the 40 respondents.
