Definition
The average length of life of a birth cohort.

In a period life table, it is the average length of life of newborn babies, assuming they experience the age-specific mortality rates of a given period throughout their life.

In a cohort life table, it is the average length of life of people born in a given period, based on the mortality rates actually experienced by them throughout their life.
