Area
refers to surface area and is expressed in terms of either square kilometres (1 sq km = 0.3861 sq. miles) or hectares (1 hectare = 2.471 acres). Figures quoted in the 1996 Census statistical tables are based on the official surface areas of regions, territorial authorities, statistical areas, and urban areas prevailing at the census date, as calculated by Land Information New Zealand. Unless specifically stated they include any water areas located within territorial authority boundaries.
