An Introduction to the Census (Census 96) (1996) - Reference Reports
What It's About

An Introduction to the Census provides users of census data with a brief history of census-taking in New Zealand and places this within its international context. The publication also includes sections on a number of the important topics covered in the census, the background to the Post Enumeration Survey, details of classifications, concepts and definitions and is the first reference point for researchers for the availability of data.

The printed version of this publication contains copies of individual and dwelling questionnaires for all censuses held between 1916 and 1996. Only the 1996 questionnaires (and help notes) are available electronically.
