Education (Census 96) (1996) - Reference Reports
What It's About
This publication contains final statistics from the 1996 Census of Population and Dwellings, New Zealand's 30th national census, held on 5 March 1996. It is one of a series of reference reports which provide detailed statistics on the characteristics of New Zealand's population, households and dwellings.
The information in this report covers the topics of educational qualifications and study course attendance for the usually resident population aged 15 years and over. Educational Qualifications in the 1996 Census were classified using the Standard Classification of Qualifications (NZSCQ). This classification was developed in response to requests for more detailed information about people’s qualifications, and because of the changes that were taking place in New Zealand’s education system with the introduction of the National Qualifications Framework. An additional feature of the 1996 Census is that for the first time, respondents were asked to give detailed information about their two highest post-school qualifications.
Qualifications are classified in NZSCQ according to their category of attainment (or level) and their field of study (or subject). The category of attainment categories are closely aligned to National Qualifications Framework levels. Meanwhile, field of study applies to post-school qualifications only and has a hierarchical structure consisting of three levels: broad fields, narrow fields and detailed fields - all but the last appear in this set of tables.
Statistics New Zealand gratefully acknowledges the participation of everyone in New Zealand in supplying information for the census. This report will introduce users to the extensive range of census data which is available.
