What It's About
This publication contains final statistics from the 1996 Census of Population and Dwellings, New Zealand's 30th national census, held on 5 March 1996. It is one of a series of reference reports which provide detailed statistics on the characteristics of New Zealand's population, households and dwellings.
The information in this report covers the topics of employment and unemployment for the usually resident population aged 15 years and over. The first section of this report deals with the changes in employment that have taken place particularly in the last 10 years, this section also covers the characteristics of employment and the characteristics of the employed. In the second section of this report, changes in unemployment and the characteristics of the unemployed are discussed.
Statistics New Zealand gratefully acknowledges the participation of everyone in New Zealand in supplying information for the census. This report will introduce users to the extensive range of census data which is available.
For tables 19 and 20, the titles have been revised. Corrected Table 19 title now reads "Full-time", and Table 20 title now reads "Part-time". Revised 26 April 1999.
