Ethnic Groups (Census 96) (1996) - Reference Reports
What It's About
This publication contains final statistics from the 1996 Census of Population and Dwellings, New Zealand's 30th national census, held on 5 March 1996. It is one of a series of reference reports which provide detailed statistics on the characteristics of New Zealand's population, households and dwellings.
The information in this report covers a wide variety of demographic, social and economic subjects for ethnic groups in New Zealand. A number of new topics were included in the 1996 Census. Of particular interest are tables exploring languages spoken, smoking behaviour, fertility and family type.
The ethnic group information in this report is presented in two distinct ways. Part (a) of each table gives ethnic group responses at level three of the ethnic classification. Individuals are counted only once and included in the group that takes highest priority in the priority recording system out of those groups that they indicated. Information on the priority ordering of ethnic groups is available from SNZ on request. Part (b) of each table is based on total responses to the fifty most frequently reported ethnic groups. People who reported more than one of these ethnic groups will be counted in each group they reported. These two sets of tables are conceptually different and are not comparable. The highlights in this publication are based on the series (a) tables unless otherwise stated.
Statistics New Zealand gratefully acknowledges the participation of everyone in New Zealand in supplying information for the census. This report will introduce users to the extensive range of census data which is available.
