National Summary (Census 96) (1996) - Reference Reports
What It's About
This publication contains final statistics from the 1996 Census of Population and Dwellings, New Zealand's 30th national census, held on 5 March 1996. It is one of a series of reference reports which provide detailed statistics on the characteristics of New Zealand's population, households and dwellings.
The information in this report covers a wide variety of demographic, social and economic subjects at a national level. A number of new topics were included in the Census in 1996 and some of these feature in this report. Of particular interest are tables exploring cigarette smoking behaviour, fertility, languages spoken, income sources and duration of residence.
With the exception of Table 1, which provides information on overseas visitors in the country at census time, all the tables in the report relate to persons who normally live in New Zealand, ie the usually resident population - provided they were in the country on census night.
Statistics New Zealand gratefully acknowledges the participation of everyone in New Zealand in supplying information for the census. This report will introduce users to the extensive range of census data which are available.
