New Zealand Now - Maori (Census 96) (1998) - Reference Reports
What It's About

Mäori are a young and growing population. This publication documents the recent trends in the demographic, social and economic situation of Mäori. It examines topics of family structure, educational attainment, longevity and, for the first time, provides information on language... the number of speakers, their age and level of education.

This book brings together a selection of statistical information on the demographic, social and economic trends and issues to inform public discussion and debate on the position of Mäori and provide an accurate basis for policy initiatives of government and the Mäori community itself. It is not intended as a comprehensive or complete study of Mäori in New Zealand. The commentary and statistical tabulations cover a wide range of topics including changes in the population size and factors contributing to this, shifts in population age structure, changes in fertility levels, changes in family and household size and structure, trends in educational participation attainment, labour force participation rates and changes in levels and sources of income. Where possible, the analyses are presented over time and in comparison with non-Mäori to highlight both change over time and the disparity between Mäori and non-Mäori.
