Pacific Islands People (Census 96) (1996) - Reference Reports
What It's About

This publication contains final statistics from the 1996 Census of Population and Dwellings, New Zealand's 30th national census, held on 5 March 1996. It is one of a series of reference reports which provide detailed statistics on the characteristics of New Zealand's population, households and dwellings.

The information in this report relates to the usually resident New Zealand population who identified as belonging to the Pacific Islands ethnic group on Census night 1996. The tables presented cover a wide range of demographic, social and economic subjects. The first six sections present tables for the Samoan, Cook Island, Tongan, Niuean, Fijian and Tokelauan groups. The final section presents information relating to the Pacific Island ethnic group as a whole, and includes the six groups listed above, plus other people of Pacific Islands ethnicity.

Statistics New Zealand gratefully acknowledges the participation of everyone in New Zealand in supplying information for the census. This report will introduce users to the extensive range of census data which is available.
