The series Pacific Islands Profiles comprise six individual books on the Samoan, Cook Islands, Tongan, Niuean, Fijian and Tokelauan communities. The books are based on findings from the 1996 Census of Population and Dwellings.
The books provide insights into important aspects of the lives of people who belong to these six Pacific Islands groups, each of which occupies a unique position in New Zealand society. Among the topics covered are languages spoken, fertility, family and household characteristics, educational attainment, labour force characteristics, income, unpaid work, religion and cigarette smoking. Where possible, comparisons are made between the group members born in New Zealand and those born overseas. Comparisons are also provided with the total Pacific Islands and New Zealand populations.
In addition to being of interest to the Pacific Island community, the books will be a valuable resource for policy-makers and others involved in service delivery across a wide range of sectors such as education, health, employment and housing.
