This is a collection of profiles of the population who were usually living within the 1998 MMP electoral boundaries on census night 4 March 1996. The data is taken from the 1996 Census of Population and Dwellings and is based on the best fit between the 1996 standard meshblock boundaries and the electoral district profiled.


These provide an overview of each of the 61 general electorates and 6 Maori electorates. They provide the number of people who were usually resident in each electorate on census night, detailing information on the age, income for men and women, ethnicity, qualifications and employment relating to people living within the electoral boundary. Also included is private dwellings information, which details the proportion of both owned and rented accommodation in each electorate. Along with these characteristics for each electorate is a comparison to the whole of New Zealand.

Definitions

Boundaries
This data is provided on the 1998 Electoral District Boundaries. However, the data is derived from the 1996 Census of Population and Dwellings, which is stored on 1996 geographic boundaries. We have taken the meshblock pattern (the smallest spatial unit) and found the best fit between this pattern and the new electoral boundaries. In some cases the fit is not exact, but this does not significantly affect the data contained in these profiles.

Usually Resident Population
People are considered to be usually resident in the area in which they indicated on their census form they usually lived. Where this information was missing or incomplete a meshblock was imputed for their usual residence.

It is important to note that these tables include people who were living within the new boundaries. They do not purport to represent the population of eligible voters. This means that the general electorate area data includes not only children and other people who may not be members of the voting population, but will also include all people of Maori descent who may choose to vote in the appropriate Maori electorate. Similarly, for the Maori electorates, the data is for all people who stated they had Maori descent and who live within the electoral boundary. Note, too, that in all cases (both general and Maori electoral areas) the “New Zealand Total” data which is included for comparative purposes refers to the New Zealand usually resident population.

Ethnicity
Ethnicity is defined as a social and cultural affiliation with which a person identifies. A person may have more than one ethnicity and this may change over time. In the census, up to three ethnicities are recorded for any individual. Data in these profiles is based on all responses given by people, so that a person identifying with more than one ethnicity will appear under each relevant category.

Benefit Income
This includes all people who stated they were in receipt of any benefit as an income source. This may not have been their sole source of income.

Median Income
This is a measure of the median income from all sources, including not only wages and salaries, but also other sources such as benefits, interest payments etc.

Labour Force
The labour force consists of all people aged 15 years and over who were either in paid employment or indicated that they were unemployed, but were available for work and were actively seeking employment.
