2001 Census of Population and Dwellings - update on census outputs
Overview of 2001 Census products and services
Statistics New Zealand's strategy is to continue using the web as the primary means of data dissemination for 2001 Census output. However, we will continue to provide an information service for users who prefer not to receive their information through our website. Where a user requires material to be printed, delivered or specifically created by Statistics New Zealand, there will normally be a charge.

Territorial Authority leaflets
This collection of 76 leaflets provides key statistics on all 74 territorial authorities (cities and districts) in New Zealand along with the Auckland and Wellington urban areas. These leaflets present information through text and graphics for the total and Mäori ethnic group populations on a wide range of topics. They can be viewed free on the website listed alphabetically or by region, or contact our Information Centre for copies while stocks last.

Meshblock database
This database holds single counts for a wide range of variables. The meshblock database is a large file to be used mainly with analytical or mapping systems. Where data is directly comparable and relevant across censuses, output is included from the 1991 and 1996 Censuses as well as 2001.
The meshblock database is available through redistributors including MapData Sciences (info@mapds.co.nz) and Critchlow Associates (diana@critchlow.co.nz) as well as directly from Statistics New Zealand. The price for the complete file from Statistics New Zealand is $1,200 plus GST. Regional council and territorial authority packages are available at lower prices. Users purchasing on behalf of multiple organisations or wishing to provide the database to other users will be subject to a redistributor price of $5,000 plus GST.
For details of content and pricing, see meshblock database content.
The meshblock database is available now. To order, contact our Information Centre.

Community profiles
Due to the recent decision to make the Census Table Builder available to all users free of charge, this product is currently under review.
These are intended to provide a broad range of useful data (approximately 25 tables) for a single geographic entity (eg a single area unit or a territorial authority). They replace and provide more flexibility in choices of geography and tables than the Standard Regional Tables of 1996 and the Regional Reports publications of 1991. Content will be based on these products. Individual tables may be available separately.

Maps and mapping systems
Mapping system packages with 2001 Census data
We are pleased to advise that two companies - Critchlow Associates and MapData Sciences - have already announced that they are developing mapping products with a 2001 Census data interface. These packages include 2001 Census data packages, digital boundaries, topographic overlays and mapping software.
Both Critchlow Associates and MapData Sciences provided packaged boundaries and census data from the 1996 Census.

Digital boundaries
The 2001 pattern digital boundaries are currently available. There are two levels of accuracy:
- Level 1 is the most detailed and is designed to align with the Digital Cadastral Database (DCDB). It is commonly used where a high level of accuracy is important, eg in positioning underground cables.
- Level 2 boundaries are less detailed. They are suitable for general mapping purposes and were used in Supermap3 as well as the 1996 Census mapping products provided by MapData Sciences and Critchlow Associates. While being slightly less detailed, they take up less system space and cost less than level 1 boundaries.
MapData Sciences and Critchlow Associates are both licensed to provide the 2001 pattern digital boundaries to users. Other providers may obtain licences in the future.
Statistics New Zealand can also provide digital boundaries.

Customised maps showing 2001 Census data (for example the number of people in a certain income group) are available from Statistics New Zealand's Information Centre.

Web-based reference maps
Maps illustrating 2001 pattern statistical boundaries are available on the web. These provide free access to users who wish to view and print simple maps showing area unit boundaries as well as ward, territorial authority and regional council boundaries.
