A total of 743,800 New Zealanders or 20 percent of the total population (excluding people living in some special types of residential facilities) are limited in their daily activities because of the long-term effects of a disability. Information about the experience of disability in New Zealand is becoming increasingly important as the population ages and New Zealand strives to eliminate barriers faced by people with disabilities.

The 2001 New Zealand Disability Survey provides statistical information on the nature and extent of disability in New Zealand, and the circumstances of people with disabilities, including their use of and unmet need for services and support.

Household Disability Survey and Disability Survey of Residential Facilities - in 2001 Statistics New Zealand ran a Disability Survey. The results of this survey are comparable with the 1996 Disability Survey.
