Introduction
Statistics New Zealand has completed a regional input-output project, which:
- assessed user needs
- evaluated a range of existing New Zealand and international regional input-output models
- evaluated potential and existing data sources
- recommended a development plan to produce official regional input-output tables for New Zealand.
Actual regional input-output tables have not been produced by this project. Statistics New Zealand currently produces annual supply and use tables that can be used to derive input-output tables at a national level, but not at a regional level.

Use of Regional Input-Output Tables
Input-output tables analyse the individual components of the economy, including industries and goods and services, material flows and wastes. The tables show, in a matrix form, the interactions and dependencies between industries.
An input-output model is a powerful tool that can be used for a wide range of economic analysis including:
- identifying and measuring the composition and level of economic activity
- understanding the inter-relationships between industries
- studying the effects of change in supply and demand throughout the economy
- analysis of the flow of goods and services between industries and regions
- understanding the volume and significance of material and waste flows by industry, when the model is adapted for this type of use, and
- providing the basis for the calculation and improvement of GDP.

Reason for Regional Input-Output Tables
The development of input-output tables at a regional level would enable economic analysis to be carried out for smaller geographic areas. At this stage there is no officially recognised regional input-output model.
Input-output tables, with adaptation, also provide the basis for wider reaching analysis, including measuring the economic contribution of composite industry groups such as tourism, the economic impacts on the environment via analysis of waste flows, and analysis of the economic activity of specific population groups, such as Mäori.
