Business Statistics - future developments
Future Developments
In the past three years, Statistics New Zealand has been continuing to develop new methods of updating the Business Frame. This new methodology enables more data from administrative sources to be used and decreases the number of postal questionnaires that are sent to businesses, while still maintaining a business frame of sufficient quality from which to produce population and samples. One of the consequences of these changes is that Statistics New Zealand no longer collects data on the employment of businesses as part of the business frame update surveys. Instead Statistics New Zealand uses data sourced from the Inland Revenue department to maintain size variables on the Business Frame.
This new strategy will have an impact on the Business Demography statistics released from 2004 onwards. Full time equivalent employee information (FTEs) previously surveyed to update the Business Frame and published in Business Demography statistics will be replaced by a simple employee count sourced from IRD data. The main difference between these two measures of employment is that the employee count does not distinguish between full-time and part-time employment.
Statistics New Zealand is currently investigating the feasibility of adding additional information on the size of business, including turnover and gross payments to employees. Further information can be obtained by contacting Statistics New Zealand
