Family and Household Projections
Statistics for Family and Household projections have as a base the estimated resident population, estimated families and estimated households of each area at 30 June 2001, and cover the period from 2006–2021 at five-yearly intervals.
They are the first set of subnational family and household projections to be produced using a 'propensity' method, superseding the 1996-base projections which used a 'household head' method.
For more information about the projections, including projection assumptions,

Household Expenditure
The Household Economic Survey collects information on the incomes and expenditure patterns of private households throughout New Zealand. Expenditure on around 2,300 individual products and services are recorded from everyday items, such as bread and milk, to other items like indoor plants and overseas travel. Average, weekly and annual expenditure is available at a national level and for four broad regions: Auckland, Top of the North Island, Bottom of the North Island and South Island.
The Regional Household Expenditure Database provides regional household expenditure estimates that have been produced by modelling Household Economic Survey data with Census of Population and Dwellings data. For around 500 expenditure items, household expenditure can be estimated down to the area unit 'suburb' level. Availability is subject to quality constraints.
Household expenditure estimates that were available annually until 1998 are now available 3-yearly from 2001.

Housing Profiles
Housing Profiles describe the housing situations of various sub-populations in New Zealand at sub-national level to build a picture of New Zealand housing in the first year of the twenty-first century. Profiles contain key statistics with brief commentary and analysis via tables and/or graphs to highlight areas of interest at sub-national level.
There are two separate components to this project:
- Profiles: Written profiles analysing various sub-populations.

Tables: 1991, 1996, 2001 Census data accessed via Table Builder by Regional Council, Territorial Authority and Area Unit.
Income
Average hourly earnings estimates from the Quarterly Employment Survey for males and females are available quarterly for regions, and for cities and districts subject to quality constraints. Information relates to the pay week ending on, or immediately before, the 20th of the middle month of the quarter (that is February, May, August and November). More detailed regional estimates are available for February when a larger sample is taken.
Average weekly income from the New Zealand Income Survey is available for the June quarter for 12 regions which combine Gisborne and Hawke's Bay regions, and Tasman, Nelson, Marlborough and the West Coast regions. Average weekly income is related to the respondent’s most recent pay period. The collected data is cash only, pre-tax (gross) income (wherever possible) and does not include any non-cash fringe benefits. Interest and investment income is not collected in order to reduce respondent burden.
A selection of Income Statistics tables are now available through Table Builder.

Inflation
The Consumers Price Index (CPI) provides a measure of change in the prices of goods and services purchased by New Zealand households. It also provides a measure of inflation and therefore plays a crucial role in the setting and monitoring of monetary policy. In addition it is used to adjust benefit payments and in wage negotiations. At a regional level the CPI is available quarterly for main urban areas: Whangarei, Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Rotorua, New Plymouth, Napier-Hastings, Wanganui, Palmerston North, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin and Invercargill.

Labour Force
The Household Labour Force Survey (HLFS) provides quarterly estimates of the labour force status of New Zealand's working-aged population. Estimates are available for the employed, unemployed, labour force, non-labour force, unemployment rate and labour force participation rate. Regional estimates are available for 12 regions which combine Gisborne and Hawke's Bay regions, and Tasman, Nelson, Marlborough and the West Coast regions.
Regional data is available free of charge in the excel tables published with the Information Release for this survey.
- Table 6 - total people employed, unemployed and not in the labour force by regional council area.
You can access this data by going to the Household Labour Force Survey page, then click on the latest Information Release link and finally click on "downloadable excel tables."
The Regional Labour Market Estimate series is a quarterly series combining HLFS estimates and model-based estimates. The model-based unemployed estimates are derived by integrating registered unemployed data from Work and Income New Zealand with HLFS data. The employed estimates used to calculate the employment rate are directly from the HLFS. The objective of the project is to improve the quality of regional labour market estimates, and increase the range of areas available.
Labour Force statistics are also available 5-yearly from the Census of Population and Dwellings. Labour Force data from the census can be cross-tabulated with a range of personal and household characteristics down to area unit level, subject to confidentiality constraints.

Life Expectancy
A life table represents the mortality experience of a population during a given period. It comprises a range of measures, including probabilities of death, probabilities of survival and life expectancies at various ages. A life table commences with a hypothetical cohort of new-born babies and assumes that they would experience the observed mortality rates of a given period throughout their life. The derived life expectancies give an indication of the average longevity of the whole population but do not necessarily reflect the longevity of an individual.
Part 4: Subnational trends in longevity and mortality of the New Zealand Life Tables - Information Releases contains life expectancy for regional councils and selected territorial authorities, for males and females, covering the three-year periods 1990-1992, 1995-1997 and 2000-2002.
There are two tables with life expectancy available in this report:
- Table 4.01 - Life expectancy at birth, regional councils and selected territorial authorities, 1990-1992, 1995-1997 and 2000-2002.
- Table 4.02 - Life expectancy at age 65 years, regional councils and selected territorial authorities, 1990-1992, 1995-1997 and 2000-2002.
For many areas, death and population numbers are too small for constructing reliable life tables. Standardised death rates provide a summary measure of the mortality experience of each area, but also allow for the different age-sex composition of each area. Standardised death rates have been calculated for all regional councils and territorial authority areas within New Zealand for the periods 1995–1997 and 2000–2002 (Table 4.03). You can access this data by clicking on the link New Zealand Life Tables - Information Releases and then and then on Part 4: Subnational trends in longevity and mortality.

Regional Economic Indicator (Experimental)
The Regional Economic Indicator series matches Goods and Services Tax (GST) returns to business units on the Statistics New Zealand Business Frame. This allows monitoring of business activity by industry (ANZSIC - 1 digit level) in regional council areas. The two variables calculated are sales and purchases that are subject to GST. Subtracting purchases from sales gives an indication of value added by businesses.
